Back from the Dark-Side of the Moon

Reach into your memory and recall when NASA used to send men to the moon, sometimes to orbit and sometimes to set down on "luna-firma." There was much more interest and pride in the space program back then, it became a part of our collective consciousness. I remember there was a bit of suspense with every moon-shot when the orbiter went to the back (or "dark-side") of the moon. When the command modular was on the "dark-side" communications were cut off. Mission Control waited; perhaps a few of those folks held their breath when the time approached that the ship should re-appear and establish contact. There were likely a few well concealed "sighs"--and then, everything became "common-place" again.

After the last six weeks I feel like I've been away to the dark-side of the moon--and I'm BACK!

Whether it was moonmen, gremlins, or some built-in "timer," more then one component of my main computer decided it was time for "retirement." Anticipating this eventuallity I did have back-ups. However, diagnostics took a bit longer than planned for, and "response" was less than "rapid". (In fact, at random times, my response might have appeared more rabid, than rapid.)

Without a ton of techno-jargon, here's a recommendation: Of course, back-up your work regularly. Don't rely strictly on floppies, (I had several that "went bad" and were useless.) If you have a CD "burner" go ahead and splurge on plenty of blanks and don't delay until you think you have enough to "fill" a whole CD. It's more time and cost effective to go ahead and burn that important stuff, even if you "waste" part of the CD blank.

Even better than the CD...when you next upgrade or purchase a new computer get TWO hard disks. The price of hard disks has come down over the years. So, even though it may sound like an extravagance, you'll be thankful when your primary HD has a melt-down or complete failure. The purpose of the second hard drive is not so you have oodles of "storage" space--it's so you can have a COMPLETE SYSTEM BACK-UP (that you maintain every 2-4 weeks) so in a crisis you can just unplug the faulty HD and switch the wiring, and be up and running in a few minutes. I had a second hard drive, that I hadn't installed yet. At least it was right here in the office. But I still had to re-install and configure over 8 GIG of programs that I use on a regular basis--PLUS all the data files. That's a lot of CDs! and that's also a lot of time!

Had I utilized that second HD as strictly a complete system back-up I would have been "back from the dark-side of the moon" at lot faster!

NEW STUFF

As time permits, the Henry County Web will be undergoing some changes. The plans so far include a new "navigation" scheme, and news "headlines" scroller on the main page, and a few other new things. Somethings will be going, some staying, and somethings will be added. But...as long as things are changing, you get a chance to suggest things that you "wish" could be included. Submit your suggestions to myhenrycounty@henrycountyky.com SUBJECT: "WISH LIST".

EVENTS

Henry County Fair
Now-July 6th
Henry County Fairgrounds

It's that time of year again. Escape from the "everyday" and walk midway, grab some food, laugh with the kids--in fact, be one, again, yourself. And don't forget to take a stroll through the exhibits! Your friends and neighbors are talented, creative, and proud to display their gardening skills, flower arranging, woodworking, culinary and needle arts, and all those things that are a part of life in Henry County. Even the kids share their enthusiasm in 4H and open-class exhibits. You just might get inspired!

Lazy Days in New Castle
The Marx Brothers
July 11th (* Rain date July 18th)
Courthouse Lawn

The New Castle Merchants and New Castle Renaissance groups present this evening of family entertainment. A meal will be available from 6-8 p.m., followed by live music. Finally, enjoy a good ol' fashion black & white Marx Brothers movie. Bring your own blankets and/or chairs, there will be concessions open all evening by the New Castle Grocery. (Harpo wig and horn, Groucho glasses and nose, optional.)

Henry County Harvest Showcase
July 26, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.
Henry County Fairgrounds

Although this annual event is only a few years old, this has quickly become a favorite. The Showcase displays and demonstrates how much we, as a community, have to offer each other and on a visionary scale, what we have to offer our countryman. But leave the lofty-er goals in the back of your mind--up in the foreground you will have FUN! FUN! FUN!
Numerous local merchants and farmers will have exhibits, and the Farmer's Market vendors will be ready to serve you with their fresh veggies and fruits. The Arts and Craft Association 's booths add much to the event. Look for the horse and buggy rides, the rabbits, ducks, mules, sheep, chickens, cattle and horses of all breeds. Don't forget to get your chances on the premium Black Angus Capstone Heifer or a $500 gift certificate for Creekstone Farms Premium Angus Beef. Chances are $1.00 each. Call the Chamber (845-0806) for more information on this great prize.

Don't forget the fabulous food offerings from Country Bo, Patron Restaurant, Henry County Cattlemen, Jeffries Farm, Lake Jericho Fire Dept., Henry County Historical Society, and the New Castle Baptist Church. All of the food will be grown in Henry County.

There will be a youth Boer goat show, hay auction, parade of horse breeds, KDA rollover safety demo, hay testing, bee keeping, and the KDA classroom trailer are among the new events, and, of course, Kentucky Kate, the life size cow who was such a hit last year will return. Music in a Box and Country Faith will entertain; there will be a demonstration of food art with Becky Dresser, and the children will enjoy learning to make their own scarecrow.

It's a day chock-full of goodtimes with your family, friends and neighbors!
